Sponsoring keynote speaker for Shropshire Business Awards

We were delighted to sponsor John Timpson’s appearance as the keynote speaker at this year’s Shropshire Business Awards.

John Timpson CBE addresses the 2016 Shropshire Business Awards.

One of the most respected management thought-leaders in the country, John has been Chairman of the family retail business, Timpson, for over 40 years. The repairs-to-keys-photo chain, which now boasts well over 1,600 shops right across the UK, also includes the Max Spielmann and Snappy Snaps brands.

“John is a hugely respected figure with an international reputation for inspiring thought leadership. His maverick approach to management is refreshing and his avuncular style and total lack of pomposity makes him a particularly entertaining and engaging speaker,” said MD Jools Payne.

“We are very proud to have worked closely with John and the Timpson business over the past 21 years, and thrilled he accepted our invitation to speak at the Shropshire Business Awards.”

Jools added: “John’s speech, delivered on the day of the Brexit result, was a typically forthright and honest assessment of the pressures of not only running but growing a privately-owned family firm in tough times. ‘It’s business as usual’ was his optimistic and upbeat message to an audience of business professionals from across Shropshire and the West Midlands still reeling from the EU Referendum result.”

In an address repeatedly punctuated by spontaneous applause as he shared poignant insights into his life as a foster carer to 90 children with his late wife Alex, the legendary retailer left the stage to a standing ovation after telling the audience of 600 business professionals “you can still be nice and run a successful business”.

Sir Philip Green take note.

“To have secured someone of John Timpson’s reputation and gravitas as our keynote speaker at the awards this year was a real coup, and we’re grateful to Jools for helping to pull it off,” explained Richard Sheehan, Chief Executive of the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, which hosted the event at Telford International Arena.
